1. FREDERICK (RHODERICK)1 RODERICK was born ABT 1750 in Germany, and died March 15, 1842 in Burke Co., N.C. (Roderick Cem.). He married (1) MARY FRANCES December 16, 1783 in Fluvanna Co., Virginia. He married (2) ELIZABETH PHILLIPS February 13, 1802 in Albemarle Co., Virginia, daughter of STEPHEN PHILLIPS and SUSANNAH ??.

There are several documents in which Frederick Roderick signed his name with "X", indicating that he could not spell. (1) On a marriage bond dated December 15, 1783, (2) On a sale of 192 ac. of land to Andrew Keith on December 5, 1792. On some of the documents his first name is spelled either Frederick or Fredrick. On some documents his last name is spelled Roderick, Rhoderick (1783 marriage license), Rodrick, and Rorick.
The marriage bond (Fluvanna Co., VA marriage bonds 1777-1790) of Frederick to Mary Frances reads:
"Know all men by these presents that one Frederick Roderick and Pleasant Coetz (??) are held in firmly bound to his Excellency, Benj. Harrison - Esq. Governor or Chief Magestrate of the Common Wealth of Virginia in the Sum of Fifty pounds to be paid to this Governor or to his Succesors in Office. To the paym. whereof well and truly to be made We bind ourselves, our heirs, Executors, & Administrators joinly and severally firmly by these presents, Sealed with our Seals and dated this 15th Day of Dec. Anno Dem. 1783.
The condition of the above Obligation is such that wheras there is a marriage Shortly intended between Frederick Roderick and Mary Frances. Now if there is no lawful come to obstruct this marriage then the above Obligation to be void, or else to remain in full force and Virtue.

Along with this document there is another consent form from relations to Mary Frances:

From the above document, I assume that Jesse Frances is the father of Mary Frances. The spelling of Roderick and Frances is interesting.
The marriage license from Fluvanna Co., VA states, "This certifies that on the 16th day of December 1783 Frederick Rhoderick and Mary Francis of the County were joined together in holy matrimony. Given under my hand this 17th day of December 1783. William Moore

The 3 tracts of land were together and lying on the south side of Mechums River in Albemarle Co., VA.
Apparently, Frederick and Elizabeth had moved to North Carolina on or before 1813.
He is shown in the 1830 census in Burke Co. His sons Nicholas and William are shown in Lincoln Co.
The 1840 census of Burke Co., NC indicates that Frederick Roderick was living "North of the Catawba - East of the North Fork". There was one male aged 80 to 90 and one female aged 70-80; Frederick and Elizabeth. Neighbors were Erban Gibbs, Wm. Fulwood, Wm. Newell, Aurbron Connelly, and Noah Spainhour.
A confusing fact is the 1810 census of Albemarle Co., Virginia. It lists Frederick Rhoderick as age >45 with wife age 26-45 and 2 males under 10 and 2 females under 10. Frederick had 4 children with his first wife and (at least) Daniel with his second wife. Yet the census shows only 5 children.
I have recently found evidence of another child of Frederick and Elizabeth. A Marjar (?) was born to them in Virginia about 1804. She married an Aron Tallent about 1826. Perhaps several children, maybe 4, including Marjar and Daniel were born between the time of their marriage in 1802 and the census of 1810. The 1870 NC census shows an Elizabeth Roderick born in 1802 in NC; this should be Daniel's wife.

She is shown in the 1840 census as being between 70 and 80; if 80, she would have been born on or before 1760. If 70, she would have been born on or before 1770. Therefore we can say that she was born before 1770.

According to the account of the Roderick family by John Roderick, Nicholas was crippled while working at a mill. His brother William took him in until he died. He never married. But, according to IGI records, a Nicholas Roderick married a Julia Gowins on October 24, 1827. This would have been about the right age for his marriage. This might also explain who the father of the following are from the 1880 Burke Co., N.C. census:

He is shown in the 1820 census in Burke Co. In the 1830 census he is shown in Lincoln Co. along with Nicholas. Both names are spelled "Rodrick".
In the 1870 census, he is shown as age 70 and being born in Virginia.

A William Roderick appears in the 1860 Arkansas census in Lagrew Township.
In 1870 the people are Cloe and Wesley Roderick in Monroe Co., Arkansas in Richland Township and a Oliver Roderick in Pulaski Co. and 2W. Little R ?.
James Fletcher Womack told me that his mother was Lillie Roderick and that she told him that her father was Adolphus Fletcher Roderick, her grandfather was Adolphus Roderick, and his father was William Roderick who came to Bradley Co., Tennessee from North Carolina. Her grandfather had brothers named Thomas and Jefferson Roderick (who married a Ms. King and moved to Loudin Co., Tennessee). James also said that he remembered his mother saying that Thomas married a Guffy. My records show that William married a Guffy.

Notes for CEPHUS RODERICK:
Enlisted in the Civil War July 4, 1862 at Salisbury, North Carolina, in Capt. Daniel W. Rhine's Company, 57th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. He was captured twice, once at Rappahannock Station, VA., and once at Petersburg. After his last capture, he was not released until June 14, 1865, and returned home.
His family immigrated to Rising Star, Texas about 1880.

Notes for ELISHA WILLIAM RODERICK:
It is not certain at this time that Elisha was the son of William Roderick, but appears to be quite likely. Elisha's Civil War record indicates that he was in Company A and also Company H, 29th Tennessee Infantry, Confederate States of America. He enlisted in Company A on July 26, 1862 , in Knoxville, TN. A note at the bottom of the company muster roll states, "Substituted for J. M. Bonner November 19, 1862." He was captured by Major General George Thomas' army at the Battle of Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga, TN, on November 25, 1863. He was taken to Louisville, KY, on December 7, 1863, and then transferred to Rock Island, IL, on December 11, 1863. He died there of pheumonia on December 19, 1863, and is buried "south of the prison barracks" in grave number 22.

Notes for JONATHAN (JOHN) HENRY RODERICK:
John H. Roderick was raised in Tennessee, building bridges to fund his education and later was a school teacher. On February 9, 1861, he came to Texas. He enlisted in Company E, under Captain Donaldson, in Alexander's regiment of the Confederate army as an orderly sergeant. He was promoted to first lieutenant and then to captain, a position he held to the close of the war. He farmed 360 acres of land in Fannin Co., was a successful farmer and a firm adherent of the Farmers' Alliance.
A J.H. Roderick is in the Fannin Co., Texas 1880 census. No Roderick's are shown in the 1870 census. He is shown in the 1910 census as living in Fannin Co. in the household of Mr. J.N. and S.E. Johnson. He claims that he, his mother, and his father were all born in North Carolina.

10. SIDNEY MONROE3 RODERICK (DANIEL2, FREDERICK (RHODERICK)1) was born January 4, 1832 in Burke Co., North Carolina, and died March 29, 1907 in Burke Co., N.C.(Oak Hill Methodist Cem.). He married SARAH JANE KERLEY November 23, 1866 in Burke Co., North Carolina, daughter of AARON KERLY and REBECCA ALEXANDER.
Notes for SIDNEY MONROE RODERICK:
He was born at the Roderick home in Linville Township on Kerley's Creek. He managed his father's farm and was the executor of his father's estate in 1860. He served in the Civil War with the 41st Infantry Regiment, Co.F (the Davis Dragoons) of Burke Co., N.C. His name is on the Civil War monument at the Morganton courthouse. He was a member of the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church in the Chesterfield community of Burke Co. (The rifle that he used in the Civil War is now in the possession of his great-grandson, John William Roderick, living in Goldsboro, North Carolina).
He enlisted in the CSA at age 28 on October 7, 1861 for twelve months service. He was wounded in action at Reams Station, Virginia, August 21, 1864. September-October 1864 muster roll reports him as absent at home on 60 day furlough.
He purchased a farm and built a home on John's River where it makes a horseshoe bend.
In the 1860, 1870, and 1880 census in Burke Co., North Carolina. He was living next door to his brother Elam in 1880 in the Upper Fork Township of Burke Co.

He enlisted in Burke County, North Carolina, on October 6, 1863 and was assigned to Co., K, 22nd. N.C. Regiment, Scale's Brigade, Wilcox's Division, A.P. Hill's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. He was reported as present on muster roll dated December 5, 1863. He reported absent sick on July 20, 1864, but returned to duty about September 12, 1864. He was paroled at Appomattox Court House, Virginia, April 9, 1865.
He lived in Ladonia, Texas his final 8 years after living in Baxter Co., Arkansas for a number of years. Some of his children are reported to have lived in the Indian Territory of Oklahoma.

"E.W. and Matilda Roderick came from Mountain Home, Ark. in 1897. Their mode of travel was two covered wagons. The family included two children at that time -- a boy named Ambers and a girl named Bertie. Ambers was very ill during the trip. The route they traveled was through the Bad Lands of Oklahoma. During the night when they camped, E.W. and his brother Bradley Roderick, had to take turns watching the mule teams to keep the Indians from stealing them.
After approximately three weeks of traveling they arrived in Grayson Co. It was around Thanksgiving.
Their third child , a girl, was born Jan. 2, 1898. The family lived a short time in Grayson Co. before moving to Hunt Co. and Fannin Co. They decided to move to Delta Co. in Jan. 1915.
E.W. and Matilda's family grew over the years to include thirteen children. Two infants died soon after birth. The oldest brother, Ambers, was killed fighting in World War I.
Those still living at this time are Millie Dee Bobo, Ruby Deatherage, Edna Sandlin, Lucille Jenkins, Martha Jane Whit, J.C. Roderick, and Roy Roderick.

"Robert Hargrave Roderick (1881-1981) was born at Mountain Home in northeastern Arkansas. He was the son of Charles and Jane Hargrave Roderick. The following is an excerpt about them from "History of Baxter County" by Mary Ann Messick: Charles Roderick, who married Jane Hargrave, was refused the vote in Izard County because he had fought in the Confederacy and would not pledge allegiance to the government after the Civil War. The day of the election he and some others rode upto the school house where the election was being held and stole the ballot box. The next morning he and his wife rode off for Texas, where they settled and raised their family near Pecan Gap, Texas.
When my grandfather, Bob Roderick, was in his late 90's, he made an audio tape telling about his trip to Texas. It is paraphrased below by his granddaughter, Phyllis Fuller.
My grandfather, Bob Roderick, came to Texas from Mountain Home, Arkansas, in 1900 when he was 19 years old. His father already had two brothers in Texas. One was John Roderick who lived near Bonham. He had been a Cavalry Captain in the Confederate Army during the War Between the States. Another brother, Elam, was in Texas. Bob's parents, his two sisters, Ethel and Tillie, and he made the trip. They traveled in a Springfield covered wagon pulled by mules. They took only what they could, such as clothes, bedding, and cooking supplies. His mother also brought her sewing machine.
They left Mountain Home on October 25, 1900. On the way they traveled with other families off and on, but there was no organized wagon train. Their closest neighbors started traveling with them. Along the way the wife got sick, and the Rodericks went on to the next town and sent a doctor back to them. They never saw these neighbors again.
They crossed many rivers. Some of them they could ford; some charged a toll for crossing the bridge; somewere swinging bridges; and some ferried across. They had to pay a man to "pilot" them across the South Canadian River because of the shifting, quick sand bottom. The driver of one wagon, which was pulled by horses insisted on going first. A stranger approached the driver and insisted that he did not need to pay someone to pilot him across. He could simply follow a wagon that had gone before them. The horse-drawn wagon was soon sinking in the quick sand. The obliging stranger volunteered to go for help, and returned with a man on a large Percheron horse which was obviously well trained for this emergency. His fee of $5 suggested that he was out to make money in the first place. The other travelers cooperated with the pilot and double-teamed across.
On the trip, his mother and sisters saw a train for the first time. His mother did the cooking in a cast iron ovenwith legs on it and in a long-handled frying pan. They traveled through the Indian Territory which was not officially a part of Oklahoma at that time.
When they got to Texas, their first visit was with Captain John Roderick, near Bonham. They arrived in Delta County on November 16, 1900, and their next stop was with my grand-dad's brother, Elam.
Nine years later, on December 9, 1909, my grandfather married Nettie Lee Smith (1891-1984) who was born and reared in Delta County. They lived on the Crawford-Norris Farm at Lost Prairie and had two children. Their daughter, Fama, married Robert Edwards; and their son, R.D., married Ernestine Hastinghs."

He called me 11-21-94 in response to a blind letter that I sent to his aunt Arlie Roderick on 11-16-94.
His mother is Lillie Roderick, grandfather was Adolphus Fletcher Roderick, his great-grandfather was Adolphus Roderick, and 2 great-grandfather was William Roderick who was from North Carolina and came to Bradley Co., Tennessee. This was told to him by his mother. I was unclear as to whether he said William's brothers were Thomas and Jefferson or these were the brothers of Adolphus. Anyway he said that his mother said that Thomas married a Guffy woman and that Jefferson married a King woman and moved to Loudin Co., Tennessee.
James said that you could always tell a Roderick by a droopy left eye.

He says that his mother has letters and maps. He told me by phone 12-14-94 that there are deeds and letters that are quite old. He was given the rifle that his great-grandfather Sidney Monroe Roderick used in the Civil War by his grandfather William Sidney Roderick before he died.
He said that his mother thought that she had a family bible, but could not find it at the time. She was quite excited about the information that I sent. He doesn't know much about the Roderick's. He said that his mother said that John Quilon Roderick did not marry. He has never been to the Roderick gravesite in Burke Co., but that his wife is from there and she knows where it is. She said the graves have the name spelled various ways. He pronounces the name like we do. Most of the hair is brown and the eyes are brown or hazel. He said that the Rodericks apparently like to drink too much.
He has an Engineering Operations degree from North Carolina State.
His father (John Sidney Roderick) was a master mechanic.
